OUR WORK
Cultivating Cultural Competence Through Embodied Artistry.
AFOUTAYI’s foundational work lies in our comprehensive education and learning programs, which are meticulously designed to foster cultural competency and artistic mastery through deep immersion in the core artistic traditions of Haiti. Our educational approach moves beyond simple technical instruction, requiring students to engage intellectually and spiritually with the material, understanding that the mastery of a dance step or a drum rhythm is simultaneously an act of historical remembrance and cultural reverence. In our learning environment, students are rigorously taught the specific vocabulary of traditional movements, the names and functions of various Haitian folk rhythms, and the symbolic language embedded within the visual arts, creating well-rounded cultural ambassadors. This is achieved through a structured curriculum that emphasizes repetition, live musical accompaniment, and contextual storytelling, ensuring that the knowledge transmitted is both accurate and deeply felt, cultivating not just technically skilled performers, but individuals with a profound, internalized understanding of Haitian culture’s rich tapestry and enduring spirit, capable of educating others and carrying the torch of tradition forward with confidence and clarity.
Play & Exploration
Finding Joy and Self-Expression Within Traditional Boundaries.
While deeply rooted in tradition, AFOUTAYI places immense value on the process of play, exploration, and creative expression within the established frameworks of Haitian arts, recognizing that true mastery must be fueled by joy and personal connection. Our classes are structured to provide dedicated space for improvisation and personal interpretation, especially once the foundational techniques are securely in place, allowing dancers to discover their unique voice within the collective rhythm and drummers to develop their ear and rhythmic intuition through spontaneous call-and-response exchanges. This element of play encourages participants to experiment with the traditional movements and melodies, fostering an environment where curiosity is celebrated and creative risk-taking is a vital part of the learning process, translating the historical weight of the art form into something personally owned and deeply expressive. By incorporating exploration and guided improvisation, we ensure that the traditional forms remain living, breathing, and relevant artistic expressions, cultivating resilient, inventive, and deeply connected artists who understand that adherence to tradition provides the foundational freedom for profound individual creativity.

Social & Emotional Development
Building Identity, Resilience, and Communal Belonging.
A fundamental component of AFOUTAYI’s work is its profound positive impact on the social and emotional development of its participants, utilizing the inherent communal nature of Haitian arts to build resilience, cultivate empathy, and foster a powerful sense of belonging. Traditional Haitian dance and music are inherently communal and collaborative art forms, where the power of the performance relies on the synchronized effort and mutual respect between dancers, drummers, and singers; this necessity for cooperation naturally builds crucial teamwork and social skills in a non-competitive, affirming environment. The act of engaging with a heritage rich in stories of survival and revolutionary freedom instills a powerful sense of cultural pride and self-worth, particularly for diaspora youth, who often find a deeper, more confident sense of identity through this embodied cultural connection. Furthermore, the supportive atmosphere of the lakou fosters vulnerability and emotional expression, providing a safe outlet for complex feelings and building deep, lasting relationships based on shared cultural reverence and artistic journey, strengthening the individual’s emotional core within a nurturing, extended family of fellow artists and cultural enthusiasts.
Programs/Services
Traditional Arts Education for All Ages, from Tots to Master Artists.
AFOUTAYI is proud to offer a comprehensive range of programs that serve participants across the entire age spectrum, from early childhood to mature adult learners, ensuring that the richness of Haitian culture is accessible at every stage of life and development. Our programming begins with our Ti Piti Ritm (Little Rhythms) classes for children aged 3 to 6, which introduce foundational movements, rhythm games, and basic visual art concepts in a playful, age-appropriate environment, focusing on coordination, cultural exposure, and communal singing. We then offer progressively structured classes for Children and Youth (Ages 7-17), where the curriculum deepens into specific traditional dance forms (e.g., Banda, Nago), complex drumming techniques, and historical context, leading to formalized performance opportunities. Finally, our robust Adult and Master Classes serve individuals 18 and older, ranging from beginner fundamental courses to advanced workshops with visiting master artists, which focus on spiritual depth, advanced technique, and artistic leadership. This intergenerational structure allows families to participate together and ensures that the wisdom of the elders is continuously shared with and absorbed by the youth, strengthening the cultural continuum within the organization and the community it serves.

Community & Engagement
The Lakou Principle: Where the Entire Family is the Community.
At AFOUTAYI, family involvement is not just encouraged; it is central to our philosophy, operating on the traditional Haitian lakou principle, which recognizes that the success of the individual artist is deeply rooted in the support and participation of the entire family and extended community. We actively design our programs and events to be family-friendly, recognizing that when parents and guardians understand the cultural depth of their child’s learning, the impact is multiplied, fostering cultural continuity and intergenerational respect. We host regular Family Culture Nights, where we share presentations on Haitian history, traditional cooking, and folklore, creating an inclusive atmosphere where both children and adults can engage with the heritage together, promoting shared learning and appreciation. Additionally, parents are invited to participate in open rehearsals and communal events, providing vital support and demonstrating to their children the value and respect afforded to the art form. This high level of family engagement ensures that the cultural pride fostered in the studio extends directly into the home, creating a strong, cohesive cultural unit that actively preserves and celebrates its heritage, making the entire family an integral part of the AFOUTAYI community and mission.
Testimonials
The Voice of Our Community: Stories of Cultural Connection and Growth.
AFOUTAYI has been a life-changing experience for my daughter, not just as a dancer, but as a young woman deeply connected to her heritage; she came here shy and unsure, and now she moves with the confidence and spiritual grounding of the ancestors. The instructors are phenomenal—not only technically brilliant, but they teach with such profound love and respect for the culture, ensuring that every session is a history lesson, a physical challenge, and a spiritual affirmation rolled into one, allowing her to connect to her Haitian roots in a way that is so powerful and emotionally restorative, providing an essential sense of belonging. The level of detail in the drumming instruction is simply unparalleled, and she has learned more in one year here about the context of the Rada rhythms than I could have taught her in a lifetime, making her feel truly empowered.
— Marc Antoine (Parent of Child, Youth Group, Age 11)
We absolutely adore the Ti Piti Ritm class; it is more than just fun, it is a truly sacred space where our little one is absorbing her culture without even realizing it. The way they seamlessly integrate traditional songs, gentle movements, and vibrant color activities makes learning about Haitian lwa and folklore an imaginative journey for her, and she comes home singing the Kreyòl songs with such pride. The teachers are incredibly patient, warm, and understand developmental stages, yet they never compromise on the authenticity of the rhythm and movement, ensuring she is building a foundational respect for tradition from the very beginning. As parents seeking to ensure our daughter retains a strong connection to our culture, we feel AFOUTAYI is an indispensable part of her education and development, providing a unique and essential cultural home for her early years.
— The Dubois Family (Parents of Child, Ti Piti Ritm, Age 4)
Joining the adult dance class has been an unexpected journey of profound self-discovery and physical healing; I originally signed up for exercise, but I found myself falling in love with the historical narrative and the spiritual depth of the movement, which has transformed my perception of my own body and capabilities. The instructors treat us with the same seriousness and reverence as they treat the most advanced dancers, patiently explaining the nuances of the Petwo steps and the difference between regional styles, fostering an incredibly supportive and non-judgmental environment where it is safe to make mistakes and grow. The live drumming is magnetic, and the energy of the communal classes is completely addictive, providing a mental and physical release that is unlike any other form of exercise or art class I’ve ever experienced. I am so grateful to AFOUTAYI for opening up this beautiful, complex world to me.
— Rhonda Johnson (Adult Learner, Master Class Level)
My son has always struggled to find his place in conventional sports and activities, but the moment he picked up the tanbou at AFOUTAYI, everything clicked into place; the focus and discipline required to master the polyrhythms have been transformative for his concentration and confidence, giving him a deep sense of accomplishment. The mentorship he receives from Maestro Fénelon is invaluable, instilling in him not just musical technique, but a profound respect for the instrument and the cultural weight it carries, turning his passion into a serious, dedicated study of the arts, which has even positively impacted his focus in school. The organization provides him with an essential sense of belonging and a community of drummers who share a profound passion, giving him a positive cultural outlet and a strong, affirming connection to the Haitian tradition that is fundamental to his identity development as a teenager in America.
— Stephanie Lemoine (Parent of Child, Youth Music Group, Age 16)
